Paskapoo Slopes Natural Environment Park is located within the Western periphery of the City of Calgary, Alberta bounded by Cougar Ridge subdivision and Canada Olympic Park (COP). The site was used by First Nations people for thousands of years as a buffalo kill and processing site, and a camping area. This landscape is arguably Calgary's most important historic cultural landscape.
Harris and Harris were selected form a number of consultants to provide branding ideas for the Park and concepts for the various elements and facilities in the park. In order to preserve the abundant archaeological sites and diverse ecology of this special area of ravines, forest and grassland, Harris and Harris developed a master plan that established new park pathways, park entry features, viewpoint areas, public gathering spaces, parking lots and way finding signage. The consulting team included an expert on the Archeology of the site and a First Nations cultural advisor, and renowned local artist Joanne Cardinal Schubert.
The proposed brand for this regionally significant cultural landscape, “First Nations People - A Hunting Culture” is intended to celebrate the site’s historic use as a First Nations buffalo kill site. The concept and design for the park features allows users of the park the ability to experience what made this site significant to the First Nations people, its natural features. The plans allow visitors to experience and interpret the site by providing pathways, benches, interpretive nodes and other elements all designed in a sustainable way. |
