Nestled within the scenic mountains of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park (Kananaskis Country, Alberta), the William Watson Lodge is a multi-use recreation facility which provides year-round accommodation for Albertans with disabilities as well as senior citizens over 65 years of age. Overlooking the beautiful Lower Kananaskis Lake, the facility is composed of a main lodge for day use, twenty-two accessible cabins, six vehicle campsites, six walk-in tenting sites, picnic sites, an amphitheatre/interpretive center and interpretive trail, a fire circle, and a playground. In addition, the facility has a broad network of trails stretching over 18 kilometers, many of which are wheelchair accessible, for walking, biking, and cross country skiing.

Harris & Harris was hired to redesign the entire site to bring it up to date with today’s barrier free design standards. New concrete walkways with handrails and tactile warning strips were designed to meet the needs of physically handicapped users. The project included the redevelopment of an existing staff parking area and bus drop of area. The budget for the project was 1.2M
